Assignment 2 Commentary
My story was inspired when a friend mentioned that hamster poop reminded her of chocolate sprinkles. So, my story is about a dinosaur who uses poop as chocolate for a cake he bakes for his girlfriend.

Going left to right and top to bottom, the dinosaur feeds a smaller animal. As it eats, it poops. The dinosaur collects the poop. He then goes to the kitchen and prepares some baking goods and bakes a cake. He decorates the cake with a piece of animal poop that looks like a chocolate truffle. He then serves the cake to his girlfriend, who appreciates the effort.

As my storyboard didn't specify camera angles, I took the photos from angles that I felt best depicted what the character was doing. I used mise-en-scene to better tell the story as well. For example, for the last photo, I used a candle to create a romantic mood. However, I did realise that I didn't play with angles, only tweaking them slightly.

The final photos I chose were the ones I felt flowed the best. However, during the critique, I was told that in the second and third photo, there is a gap because the container holding the "poop" were different. Some also felt that there should be a close up of the dinosaur picking up the poop after the second photo. Most importantly, I think there was some confusion as to what was going on because someone asked if the dinosaur intentionally fed poop to his girlfriend.

Thus, in my revised storyboard, I included some scenes to make it clearer that the dinosaur was using the animal poop as chocolate for the cake. Going left to right, top to bottom again, the dinosaur looks through his ingredients list to see that the only ingredient he needs to collect left is chocolate. He finds an animal eating and collects its poop. He then goes back to the kitchen and mixes everything together, including the poop. He bakes the cake and then gives it to his girlfriend, who is delighted.

When I shot again, I made sure to try different angles. Again, I used mise-en-scene to help with the storytelling. Previously, I shot the baking photos at the dining table in the living room. I felt as though that the setting could improve. Thus, I shot the same photos in the kitchen, showing the condiments and knife stand in the background. For the last shot, I used props to show that it was a special occasion that the green dinosaur was baking for. The pink gift box in the corner shows that it perhaps could be an anniversary or birthday celebration. The car in the background shows that instead instead of simply buying a gift for his girlfriend, the dinosaur choses to make a heartfelt gift for her too.
