Assignment 1 Commentary
The object I decided to abstract was a PS4 controller because it was through playing PS4 games that I formed close relationships with my brothers. Now, I play multiplayer games with my boyfriend when I have the time.
I look the photo of me holding the controller but I realised that it wasn't totally flat. Thus, in stage 1, I replicated the controller totally, only changing the perspective to make it flat. In stage 2, I removed the lines that represented the contours of the controller so that it looked even more flat. In stage 3, I removed the words and the directional arrows on the left, the logos on the buttons on the right side and the PlayStation logo on the middle button. In stage 4, I removed the top and middle buttons. Lastly, in stage 5, I decided to change the directional buttons on the left to organic shapes. In this case, I changed them to circles.
Thus, in the final submission, stage 1 was a replication of the photo I took. The only thing abstracted at this stage is colors. Shading was used to show depth and contours. In stage 2, I removed my hand and the background. I also changed the perspective to make the object look more object and symmetrical. In stage 3, I removed the shading and some of the contours to make the image look even flatter. I removed some of the words on the controller that were unnecessary. In stage 4, I stripped more of the unnecessary details, removing the contours at the ends of the controller, the toggles and the directional arrows. In the final stage, I simplified the image even further by filling the toggles with black and removing the logos on the buttons on the right. The buttons on the sides of the rectangle were also removed because they were not essential.

During the critique in tutorial, some classmates commented that they felt the PlayStation logo should remain in the final abstraction so that it is distinct from other controllers. They also felt that the top buttons should remain. The directional buttons shouldn't change because those unfamiliar with the controller might not know which side is the directional buttons and which is the action buttons. In short, the final stage should be somewhere between stage 2 and 3.
