Week 6 Lecture Exercise

One issue is that body paragraph is center aligned. This reduces readability because there isn't a consistent starting point. A solution to this would be to left align the text. Another issue is that the text for the header and the body paragraph are the same. Thus, the text looks bland and undifferentiated. In this case, the font without a fill colour also makes the letters hard to make out. Perhaps a fill colour would help. However, a better solution would be to change the font of the body paragraph. Complementary fonts should be used. A serif font should be used for the small body text while still using the sans serif font for the header.

Week 5 Lecture Activity

Over the weekend, I shot a few photos of a friend playing the violin for a project I'm currently working on. The first shot is a long shot, wherein we see his full body against a background. Long shots establishes the setting. This tells us a few things such as the location and the time of day.  In short, it gives context to the scene. The In this picture, we can see that the subject is playing the violin in what seems like the middle of nowhere (but if you must know, in Tuas). Another shot I took was a medium close up, wherein the frame cuts the subject mid-torso. The photo taken is also a portrait in which the subject looks indirectly into the camera. This allows viewers to see their facial expression, their mood and their personality. MCUs also allows the audience to see the setting and environment.  The third photo taken was an extreme close up, wherein the viewer is able to see details that would normally go unnoticed in a medium close up...

The signifier in the ad is the tomato slices placed together to form the shape of a Heinz ketchup bottle. What is signified is the notion of freshness and natural, meaning to say that Heinz ketchup is made from the organic, freshest ingredients. The copy "No one grows Ketchup like Heinz", particularly the word "grows", goes hand in hand with this idea of natural and fresh ingredients because it makes the viewers think of a farm.

The ad that my group and I critiqued was the following McDonald's ad in Switzerland. The ambient ad  cleverly turned yellow  pedestrian crossing  lines into french fries in the iconic McDonald packaging.  It is a smart use of McDonald’s infamous fries as a recognisable image imitating a crossing, in a place where its audience are forced to see and interact with it. The large recognisable McDonald’s branding is unmissable.  The advertisement is also placed in such a unique  way   and at such an unexpected location, make the ad capable of grabbing attention and eliciting positive emotions from the audience. The advertisement is highly successful, also considering that it still appears in Google search for guerrilla marketing. It is fun, exciting and most importantly, capable of increasing brand awareness and encouraging audiences to consume their product. A potential flaw would be that the advertise...
